What does a retaining wall contractor in Barnstable build?

A retaining wall holds soil where the ground changes level. Cape Cod is gentle compared with much of New England, but it still has hills, bluffs along the water, kettle hole ponds and many lots cut into a slope. Walls show up beside driveways, around patios, along garden terraces and at the edge of banks.

We build with segmental block, natural stone and boulders. The wall face is the smaller part of the job. Behind it goes a base of compacted stone, clean gravel backfill, filter fabric and often a perforated drain pipe, so water does not build up and push the wall over. Drainage work on its own includes French drains, dry wells, downspout extensions and regrading, and we often combine it with a wall.

Which problems do walls and drainage fix?

These are the issues Barnstable owners call about most.

  • Washouts after storms. Heavy rain carries sand and mulch down a slope into the driveway or lawn.
  • Soil sliding onto a patio or walkway. A grade change without support slowly collapses.
  • Water near the house. Runoff against a foundation can lead to a damp crawl space or basement.
  • Soggy low spots. Some lots hold water after rain because of a high water table or a hard layer in the soil.
  • Steep lawn that is hard to mow. A short wall can create a level step that is easier to use.

Sandy soil drains well, so many drainage problems come from where the water is sent, not how fast it soaks in. A downspout that dumps beside the foundation is a common cause.

What changes the price of a retaining wall or drainage job?

Walls and drainage are priced by the job, not by a standard rate. Here is what moves the number.

  • Height and length. Taller walls need deeper bases, more material and sometimes engineering.
  • Material. Block, natural stone and boulders differ a great deal in cost and labor.
  • Access. Heavy stone moved by hand through a tight yard takes much longer.
  • Drainage. Pipe, gravel, dry wells and outlet work add to the scope.
  • Old wall removal. Tearing out a failed wall and hauling it away is extra work.
  • Permits and review. Tall walls or work near wetlands or coastal banks can add steps.

A wall often goes with a patio or yard overhaul. See hardscaping and landscape design for how we plan the whole space together.

A low garden wall can take a few days. A longer wall with a drain system and regrading often takes one to two weeks. Tall or curved walls, or walls that need engineered plans and inspections, take longer. Rain slows excavation and makes it hard to compact the base, so we plan around the forecast and tell you when dates move.

The best season runs from spring through fall. Frozen ground in winter stops digging and compaction, and building on a poor base is how walls fail. If you see soil already moving after storms, call sooner, since bare slopes lose more material with each heavy rain. We can often suggest a short term fix to hold things until the right working window.

Do you need a permit, and what happens on the day?

It depends on the wall. In Massachusetts, walls above a certain height, commonly about four feet, usually need a building permit and an engineered design. Work on a coastal bank, near a wetland, or close to a pond can need conservation commission review. Ask the town, and tell us early so we can plan around it. Utility marking through 811 comes before any digging, and we also ask where your septic system and buried lines sit.

On the day, expect an excavator or hand digging, deliveries of stone and block, and a lot of compacting. We keep the work area tidy and protect your lawn where we can. Call when you notice soil moving, water pooling, or a wall that leans or bulges. You can also start at our home page to see everything we do in Barnstable.

Questions about landscaping in Barnstable

Why do retaining walls fail?

Most failures come from poor drainage and a weak base. Water builds up behind the wall, soil gets heavy and pushes outward, and freeze and thaw make it worse. A proper wall has a compacted stone base, clean gravel backfill and a way for water to escape. Skipping those hidden parts is what leads to leaning or bulging walls.

Is block or natural stone better for a wall?

Both can last when built right. Segmental block is uniform, goes up faster and is often easier on budget. Natural stone and boulders look at home in a Cape Cod setting and can suit informal gardens. Timber walls tend to rot in wet ground and are not our usual advice. We help you choose based on height, style and the site.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Often only for taller walls, which in Massachusetts commonly means about four feet or more. Walls on a coastal bank or close to wetlands may also need town review, whatever the height. Rules differ between towns and lots, so check with the building department and conservation office before you start, and tell us so we can plan the work.

Can drainage be fixed without a wall?

Yes. Many wet yards need only regrading, a downspout extension, a French drain or a dry well. We look at where the water comes from and where it can go. Sometimes the cheaper fix is enough. If a slope is also moving, a wall may help, and we explain the choice before you commit.

How do I know a wall is in trouble?

Look for leaning or bulging, cracks between blocks, gaps opening at the ends, soil washing out below the wall, or water staining on the face. Any of these is worth a call. A small repair now often costs far less than rebuilding a wall after it collapses, and we will tell you plainly what the wall needs.
